Introduction:
When you get a document notarized, one of the most important aspects of the process is making sure that it is done correctly. This means having all of the required elements in place, including having a witness present (if needed).
But what does it mean to be a witness? And who is able to serve as one? In this blog post, we will answer these questions and more!
A witness is someone who is present during the notarization of a document and can attest to the fact that it took place. The witness does not need to understand the content of the document, but must be able to confirm that they saw the person signing it.
This is important because, in some cases, a person may sign a document without reading it or understanding what it says. Having a witness present helps to ensure that the person signing the document is doing so knowingly and willingly.
In the state of Georgia, any person who is 18+ years of age and is not a party to the document being notarized can serve as a witness. This means that, as long as you are not the one signing the document, you can witness the notarization.
It is important to note that, while anyone can serve as a witness, it is best to choose someone who you know and trust. This is because they may be called upon to testify in court about what they saw during the notarization.
Need a witness for your documents? We can Help!
If you are not able to provide a witness, don't worry. Communicate with the mobile notary that a witness will be needed and most notaries will have a "witness list" which they can contact to serve as a witness during the signing.
Please note that in the state of Georgia a notary is prohibited from being both the witness and notary on the same document.
